Psychological Assessment

Psychological assessment, or testing, is used to better understand your child’s social-emotional, behavioral, and/or cognitive functioning to inform treatment recommendations, differentiate between medical diagnoses, and highlight strengths and areas of growth. At Piedmont Family Psychology, we specialize in the assessment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorders (SLDs), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

We also work with parents to assess for kindergarten readiness and gifted/talented qualification and offer diagnostic assessments for mood, trauma, and anxiety disorders.

Reaching Out

If you’re interested in initiating testing with Dr. Lerner or Dr. Levine, let us know through phone, email, or text, whichever works best for you. From there, we’ll get you enrolled in our online portal and scheduled for an intake. We can also talk through whether testing, therapy, or other services would be best, if you have questions.

Getting Started

Like therapy, the testing process starts with an intake session, generally lasting about 60 minutes. During this time, we will ask about your concerns and questions, your child’s background, and your experience with other evaluations and healthcare providers. At the end of this session, we will discuss next steps and schedule for testing sessions.

As a thorough clinical history is important for comprehensive assessment, please be prepared to answer questions about your child’s early development and the progression of your concerns.

Testing Sessions & Feedback

The testing battery is determined by the specific referral question and concerns, though psychological assessment often involves a thorough clinical interview, behavioral observations, parent/teacher reports, IQ testing, and academic achievement testing. Testing sessions with your child are generally scheduled in two-hour time blocks, and we will discuss in advance the number of sessions likely needed. Following completion of testing, we will schedule a feedback session to talk through a written report of assessment findings and recommendations.

Insurance Information

 We are out-of-network providers, meaning we do not accept insurance. However, many insurance companies provide out-of-network reimbursement for mental health services, including psychological assessment. If this is true for you, we are happy to provide an electronic superbill you can submit for possible reimbursement. To learn more about your coverage, we recommend asking your insurance company the following questions:

  • Is psychological testing covered under my plan?

  • Does the diagnosis, or reason for testing, affect coverage?

  • What is the reimbursement percentage for out-of-network testing?

  • How do I submit a claim for reimbursement?

Payment & Fees

Payment is due at the time of visit. We accept credit card, debit card, or HSA/FSA payments for services rendered. Testing is $220 per hour, and most evaluations average 10-15 hours, which includes the initial intake, testing sessions, feedback session, and writing time.

While testing and writing hours differ per client, a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) will be provided prior to the assessment process. If you have questions about the cost of services at any time, please always feel comfortable talking to your provider.
